Define an Actor and System State

Updated by Chris Kosmopoulos

The Actor identifies who is performing the task, while the System State describes the state of the system before the task is performed.

To define a system state and an actor:

  1. Click the (…) on the task.
  2. In the Additional Details modal:
    1. Enter a description of the system state in the System state field.  To generate well-formed user stories from a process the system state should start with a verb, and use the present participle form of a verb (that is, verb + ing), in the third person (for example, “displaying main screen” or "updating account info," or "authenticating login").
    2. Search for and select an existing Actor artifact within your project by clicking the Select button.  Previously used Actors will appear in the drop-down for rapid selection.
    3. Click OK.
